Job summary

Responsibilities

Job Summary:

The Regional Safety Manager leads the development, implementation, and administration of workplace safety programs across Anchor Bay Packaging facilities in Michigan and Texas. This position establishes consistent policies and practical site procedures, evaluates whether they are followed, and works with plant leadership to correct hazards. The manager oversees safety documentation, training systems, inspections, incident investigations, and regulatory responses. Regular presence in production and warehouse areas and travel between states are required as needs arise.

Duties/Responsibilities:

1. Safety Program Leadership and Administration:

• - Develop, implement, and maintain company safety policies, written programs, procedures, and standards for Michigan and Texas facilities; adapt them to site hazards and applicable requirements.
• - Set regional safety priorities and annual improvement plans in partnership with Operations leadership; establish clear responsibilities for facility managers and supervisors.
• - Administer the safety program, including document control, review schedules, standard forms, inspection calendars, training matrices, and records of required qualifications.
• - Review new or changed equipment, processes, layouts, and work practices before startup and recommend controls in coordination with Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering.
• - Maintain a visible presence at each facility, advise leaders on safe work practices, and elevate serious or unresolved risks to senior leadership.

2. Regulatory Compliance and Risk Control:

• - Interpret and apply applicable OSHA requirements for Texas operations and MIOSHA requirements for Michigan operations; monitor changes and update programs accordingly.
• - Lead regional safety inspections, audits, job safety analyses, and hazard assessments in production, maintenance, warehouse, and shipping areas.
• - Evaluate and improve high-risk programs, including lockout/tagout, machine guarding, powered industrial trucks, electrical safety, PPE, hazard communication, emergency preparedness, and combustible dust housekeeping.
• - Assign corrective actions to responsible site leaders; track due dates, verify effectiveness, and elevate overdue or high-risk items.
• - Coordinate safety aspects of regulatory inspections, complaints, citations, abatement, and related documentation with company leadership and counsel as appropriate.
• - Oversee required injury and illness recordkeeping and safety reporting, including site-specific OSHA logs and postings.

3. Incident Investigation and Injury Prevention:

• - Lead or oversee investigations of serious injuries, illnesses, near misses, property damage, and high-potential events; identify root causes and contributing conditions.
• - Standardize investigation methods, train local leaders, and verify that corrective and preventive actions are completed and communicated across affected sites.
• - Analyze injury, near-miss, and exposure trends and recommend controls that reduce recurrence.
• - Partner with Human Resources, workers compensation carriers, and occupational health providers on injury prevention, reporting accuracy, modified duty safety, and loss-control recommendations; HR retains claims administration and employee case management.

4. Training and Safety Engagement:

• - Develop a role-based safety training plan, including new-hire safety orientation, initial qualification, refresher training, and supervisor instruction.
• - Deliver or coordinate training on applicable safety programs; identify and qualify local trainers for hands-on equipment instruction and evaluations.
• - Oversee training completion, certifications, evaluations, and retraining records; follow up with local leadership when requirements are overdue.
• - Coach managers and supervisors in hazard recognition, safety conversations, inspections, and accountability for safe work practices.
• - Facilitate safety committees and employee hazard reporting; share lessons learned and effective practices among facilities.

5. Emergency Preparedness and Performance:

• - Maintain facility emergency action procedures and coordinate drills for fire, severe weather, medical emergencies, and other relevant events.
• - Maintain regional safety measures for inspections, training, incident trends, corrective actions, and recordable injuries; report findings and priorities to leadership.
• - Coordinate with insurance loss-control representatives and external safety specialists; follow recommendations through completion.

Qualifications

Competencies:

• - Ability to lead safety initiatives across multiple facilities and influence operational leaders without relying solely on direct authority.
• - Strong knowledge of manufacturing hazards, risk assessment, incident investigation, and practical corrective action.
• - Clear written and verbal communication; ability to translate regulatory requirements into usable procedures and training.
• - Strong organization, follow-through, data analysis, and proficiency with standard office and recordkeeping systems.
• - Sound judgment, discretion, and willingness to address unsafe practices promptly.

Education and Experience:

• - Bachelors degree in occupational safety, environmental health and safety, engineering, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
• - At least five years of progressively responsible safety experience in manufacturing, packaging, warehousing, or a similar industrial setting; multi-site program experience preferred.
• - Demonstrated experience creating written safety programs, leading audits and investigations, administering training, and managing corrective actions.
• - Working knowledge of general industry OSHA standards and ability to learn and apply Michigan-specific MIOSHA requirements.
• - OSHA 30-Hour General Industry training and a professional safety credential such as ASP or CSP preferred.
• - Ability and willingness to travel to Michigan and Texas facilities, including overnight travel, as safety and operational needs require.

Physical Requirements:

• - Ability to regularly walk and stand in active manufacturing and warehouse areas during inspections, training, and investigations.
• - Ability to navigate stairs, access equipment areas, and bend, reach, or crouch as reasonably needed to evaluate work conditions.
• - Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and work around noise, dust, moving machinery, and varying temperatures.
• - Ability to travel by car and air to company facilities and respond to significant safety matters as needed.
