Job summary

The Salvation Army seeks a Regional Planned Giving Director to cultivate, solicit, secure, document and steward planned gifts across Central Maryland, Eastern Shore, Western Maryland, and the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. The role supports mission goals through donor programs and gift strategies.

Ideal candidate has 3+ years in fundraising, strong relationship-building, and the ability to work from a home office with substantial travel, including to our Alexandria headquarters.

Qualifications

  • Three years’ experience in fundraising, planned giving, major gifts, or related fields.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with individual donors and advisors.
  • Self-starter capable of working from a home office with minimal supervision.
  • Experience managing a portfolio of donors/prospects.

Responsibilities

  • Cultivate and steward planned gifts and donor relationships.
  • Solicit gifts via wills, trusts, annuities, and other vehicles.
  • Communicate with donors, prospects, boards, staff, and officers.
  • Educate boards and share planned giving success stories.
  • Travel within Central Maryland, Eastern Shore, Western Maryland, and WV/occasional HQ travel.

Key responsibilities:

This position is responsible for cultivating, soliciting, securing, documenting, and stewarding planned gifts, such as wills, charitable trusts, charitable gift annuities beneficiary designations and other gift strategies to fund the Mission of The Salvation Army.

  • Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with donors and their professional advisors.
  • Responds to inquiries and communicates with donors, prospects, advisory board members, Salvation Army staff and Officers.
  • Conducts personal visits after identifying prospects, consults with individuals about specific planned giving vehicles and assists them in their charitable estate planning to help them decide on the most appropriate planned gift for their personal circumstances.
  • Educates advisory boards and presents planned giving success stories and strategies.
  • Attends and participates in conferences and training sessions, maintains up-to-date knowledge and awareness of planned giving practices and legislation in relation to planned giving and taxation.
  • Travels often within the following region Central Maryland, Eastern Shore of Maryland, Western Maryland / Eastern Panhandle of WV area. (This position does occasionally require travel outside of the director's assigned geographic region for conferences, meetings at our headquarters in Alexandria, and occasionally for assisting with donors in other areas within the division).

Ideal candidate resides in the Baltimore, Maryland area.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Manual dexterity. Ability to sit, walk, and stand on a frequent change basis in order to perform the duties of this position. Ability to lift objects weighing between 25-50 lbs. Ability to travel throughout the Division, by automobile, on a regular basis to work with donors/prospects, and professionals in their communities. Travel may include overnight trips; Travel requirements may be up to 60% of work time.

Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts with noise, dust, dirt, and the like. Work is also performed in a home office setting, and, in a variety of multiple Corps and Area Command offices.

Qualifications: WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR IN YOU
  • Three years’ experience achieving results in the fundraising field; planned giving, major gifts, development, capital campaigns or related (financial advisor, outside territorial sales, etc.).
  • Bachelor's degree (preferred, but not required)
  • Demonstrated ability and experience building strong relationships with individual clients.
  • Demonstrated self-starter and ability to work with minimal supervision from a personal home office.
  • Experience actively developing, cultivating, stewarding, and managing a portfolio of donors (or prospects).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public presentations.
License/Certifications
  • Valid State Driver’s License
  • Bona-fide Occupational Qualification (BFOQ)
