The Salvation Army seeks an Associate Planned Giving Director to serve donors and advisers from our Alexandria area HQ. This full-time role focuses on cultivating donor relationships, communicating with prospects, and guiding charitable estate planning with planned giving vehicles.

The ideal candidate will have 3+ years in fundraising, a strong network-building ability, and the flexibility to travel regionally within West Virginia and Cumberland, MD.

Qualifications

• Three years’ experience in fundraising or related field.
• Experience in planned giving and managing a donor portfolio.
• Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with individual clients.
• Self-starter with ability to work from a personal home office.

Responsibilities

• Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with donors and their professional advisors.
• Responds to inquiries and communicates with donors, prospects, advisory board members, Salvation Army staff and Officers.
• Conducts personal visits after identifying prospects and discusses planned giving vehicles to guide charitable estate planning.
• Educates advisory boards and presents planned giving success stories and strategies.
• Travels to West Virginia region and Cumberland, MD up to 60% of time and stays aware of current planning laws.

Key responsibilities:

• Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with donors and their professional advisors.


• Responds to inquiries and communicates with donors, prospects, advisory board members, Salvation Army staff and Officers.


• Conducts personal visits after identifying prospects, consults with individuals about specific planned giving vehicles and assists them in their charitable estate planning to help them decide on the most appropriate planned gift for their personal circumstances.


• Educates advisory boards and presents planned giving success stories and strategies.


• Attends and participates in conferences and training sessions, maintains up-to-date knowledge and awareness of planned giving practices and legislation in relation to planned giving and taxation.


• Travels often within the following region of West Virginia (sans Martinsburg in the panhandle) and Cumberland, MD.

Ideal candidate resides in the Parkersburg or Charleston area.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Manual dexterity. Ability to sit, walk, and stand on a frequent change basis in order to perform the duties of this position. Ability to lift objects weighing between 25-50 lbs. Ability to travel throughout the Division, by automobile, on a regular basis to work with donors/prospects, and professionals in their communities. Travel may include overnight trips; Travel requirements may be up to 60% of work time.

Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts with noise, dust, dirt, and the like. Work is also performed in a home office setting, and, in a variety of multiple Corps and Area Command offices.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR IN YOU

• Three years’ experience achieving results in the fundraising field; planned giving, major gifts, development, capital campaigns or related (financial advisor, outside territorial sales, etc.).


• Bachelor’s degree (preferred, but not required)


• Demonstrated ability and experience building strong relationships with individual clients.


• Demonstrated self-starter and ability to work with minimal supervision from a personal home office.


• Experience actively developing, cultivating, stewarding, and managing a portfolio of donors (or prospects).


• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public presentations.

License/Certifications

• Valid State Driver’s License


• Bona-fide Occupational Qualification (BFOQ)
