Job description

Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operator - Refuse Collection

Under general supervision, performs specialized skilled work in operating motorized heavy equipment used in transferring refuse and debris from collection sites to the SPSA landfill for the Public Works Department. Work involves operating equipment such as refuse compactors, crash trucks, or dump trucks. The employee is responsible for manipulating these vehicles with skill and safety, performing minor preventive maintenance, and assisting department labor crews. Independent judgment is exercised in performing tasks. Reports to the Refuse Field Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Inspect compactor and other trucks daily, checking oil, water, tires, air tanks, and other requirements; report damages.
  2. Pick up large refuse, limbs, and bulk items; assist with neighborhood clean-ups.
  3. Call dispatch for oversized debris; assist in public event preparations and other duties as assigned.
  4. Maintain cleanliness of trucks; report breakdowns and arrange repairs.
  5. Follow safety procedures at all times, including during inclement weather or emergencies.
  6. Dispose of dead animals in the downtown area.
  7. Perform on-call duties during severe weather conditions.
  8. Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL); permit acceptable with a requirement to obtain full license within six months.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment operation and safety precautions.
  • Skill in operating heavy trucks and performing minor maintenance.
  • Ability to operate trucks safely, follow instructions, and work effectively in challenging environments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, establish relationships, and perform mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to read work orders and convey information clearly.
