Job summary

Marathon Petroleum in Carson, California is seeking a Project Controls Specialist to lead project controls for capital and expense programs ranging from $2M to $100M+. You will collaborate with PMs, engineering, procurement, construction, and accounting to ensure plans and controls drive performance improvements.

The role requires 5+ years in project controls within refining or petrochem, solid cost/schedule integration, and experience with Primavera P6.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and 5 years of project controls experience in refining or petrochemical industry, or a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Construction Management with 4+ years of project controls experience.
• Knowledge of stage-gate processes, deliverables, and multi-discipline estimating and field construction experience.
• Proficient in Microsoft 365: Word, Excel, Outlook.
• Experience with Primavera P6.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to work in a fast-paced, team environment.
• Must be able to wear PPE, perform field tasks, and pass hair drug test and physical.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and be legally authorized to work in the US without visa sponsorship.
• Travel up to 5% and ability to work one of the onsite schedules (9/80, 5/40, or 4/1).

Responsibilities

• Prepare and manage project budgets, forecasts, and cost reports; track costs against baselines and implement cost controls.
• Develop and maintain detailed project schedules using Primavera P6; integrate scope, schedule, and cost data for execution.
• Apply earned value management (EVM) to monitor performance; generate and interpret CPI, SPI, and related metrics.
• Identify, assess, and monitor project risks and opportunities; develop mitigation plans and contingency budgets.
• Develop and deliver progress reports, dashboards, and executive summaries for stakeholders.
• Ensure adherence to project controls standards, procedures, and contractual requirements; support audits and reviews.
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, procurement, construction, and accounting; mentor junior staff.
