The U.S. Department of the Navy in Norfolk, VA, seeks a Materials Recycling Technician to identify and sort recyclables, dispose of non-recyclables, and document transport of recyclables according to standard procedures.
Qualified candidates will demonstrate the ability to operate balers, forklifts, and related tools, with a focus on safety and accuracy in record-keeping and material handling.
The position is located within the Mid-Atlantic Region, Navy Facilities Engineering Command, Quality Recycling Program, Norfolk VA. The purpose of this position is to receive, identify, sort, and separate recyclables from non-recyclables, properly dispose of non-recyclable material, and document/prepare/transport recyclable materials in accordance with standard procedure.

A qualified candidate must possess: NA04: Must have ability to identify facility layout, recyclable versus non-recyclable materials, and types and locations of proper storage areas. Some prior recycling experience is preferred. Must have physical ability to bend, lift, load/unload heavy and/or bulky items. Must be able to follow basic instructions and work independently once trained. Must possess basic writing and math skills to document receipt and amount of deliveries, identify and label hazardous materials, and estimate quantities. Must demonstrate skill in use of equipment used in recycling tasks to include operating electric balers, hydraulic jacks/lifts, fork lifts, bobcat loaders, manual banding machines, and possess basic knowledge of hand tools such as hammers, pliers, strapping tools, metal band sheers, etc. Drivers license is strongly preferred.
NA05: A valid drivers license is required, and must be maintained at all times. A forklift license is strongly preferred. At this level, the incumbent may work with a wide range of different recyclable items, and is responsible for knowledge of the proper storage, handling, and dispensation of each type.
