Drives and operates heavy-duty trucks and equipment in the hauling and distribution of solid waste materials.
• Operates light to heavy duty trucks and equipment, including dump trucks, flat-beds, roll-off trucks, scraper pans, vibratory screen machines, fork lifts, tractors, bush hogs, industrial grinders, loaders, backhoes, pans, compactors, graders, dozers, tankers and four-wheel drive pick-up trucks.
• Collects, segregates, transports and off-loads household hazardous waste and participates in household hazardous waste collections, depending on assignment.
• Inspects trucks, tools and equipment; performs repairs and preventive and routine maintenance of assigned trucks, tools and equipment; ensures trucks, tools and equipment are properly maintained.
• Operates scale house; including weighing inbound and outbound loads; interacting with private and public customers; entering data using computer software systems; executing cash transactions; inspecting waste materials, etc..
• Assists with traffic control at work sites.
• May haul leachate from landfills to the wastewater sewer plant, depending on assignment.
• Performs physical labor in the maintenance, restoration or construction of; roadways, stormwater systems, disposal sites, and environmental restoration infrastructure.
• Maintains landfills to comply with Florida Department of Environmental Regulation Long Term Care requirements and other related regulatory requirements, including bush-hogging, landscape maintenance, access road clearing, well network access, groundwater pumping conveyance, etc.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Training, and Experience: High school diploma or GED supplemented by four (4) years’ experience in the operation of heavy-duty trucks and equipment, including bulldozer, front-end loader, excavator and field tractor, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Licenses and/or Certifications: Requires a valid Class “B” commercial driver license (“CDL”). Must obtain a 24-hour HAZWOPER Certificate within six (6) months of hire. Must obtain Spotter Certification within one (1) year of hire. May require a valid Class “A” CDL with a tanker endorsement, depending on assignment.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to operate heavy-duty trucks and equipment requiring manipulation of multiple controls, where excellent eye/hand/foot coordination is essential for safe and productive operations. Must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. Tasks include considerable bending, stooping, climbing, etc., and working in confined spaces. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work.
Language Ability: Must be able to communicate effectively in Standard English, and to convey information to others.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving concrete variables in situations where limited standardization exists; to make independent judgments in the absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
Numerical Aptitude: Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide; determine weight; may require the ability to calculate decimals and percentages.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress. Requires the ability to exercise consistent tact and courtesy when in contact with various professionals, county staff, and the general public.
