Job Summary

Provides recreational activities, leisure education, and treatment for people with mental, physical or emotional disabilities or illnesses to improve or maintain their health and well-being. Selects, develops, and implements recreational activities to help clients improve physical, mental, and social functions. Assesses clients' needs and interests based on observations, standardized assessments, and medical records for the selection and development of therapeutic recreations. Thorough knowledge of therapeutic recreational therapy theory and practices is required. Documents appropriately to meet regulatory requirements per assigned setting on behalf of the clients' participation and reactions during therapeutic recreation treatments; tracks patients' progress and evaluates therapeutic effects. Provides adaptive equipment to help clients with disabilities participate in recreational activities assigned in treatment plans. May assist with and/or provide community integration as part of their treatment. When necessary, will participate in facilitating support groups, as well as coordinating volunteers.

Qualifications

Within the hospital inpatient setting, a Bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation is required. When applicable, may require a valid driver's license. Must maintain certification as a professional Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) level through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification with yearly maintenance and re-certification required every five years.
