Note: Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).

THE POSITION

The City of Sunnyvale Department of Library and Recreation Services is seeking three SYBL Gym Managers within the Sports, Aquatics and Facilities unit to assist with the implementation and oversight of the Sunnyvale Youth Basketball League. Candidates may be assigned evening and/or weekend shifts within this position.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The SYBL Gym Manager position may exercise oversight and specific experience in supporting SYBL. The primary assignment for this position is for the seasonal Sunnyvale Youth Basketball League (SYBL).

This position will be mainly based in the Recreation Building on the Community Center Campus, in the Recreation Services Division of the Department of Library and Recreation Services. Travel to other locations within Sunnyvale will be required.

(May include, but are not limited to, the following):

• Opens and closes school and City facilities.
• Handle all situations arising in the gym, including, but not limited to, customer service, emergencies, and facilities-related issues.
• Basic knowledge of high school basketball rules and understanding of skills necessary to play basketball.
• Can officiate while instructing players on basketball skills and game rules.
• Assist with scorekeeping.
• Interact and communicate effectively with children, parents, coaches and City staff
• Ensure the safety and well-being of program participants

WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work-related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal customer service. The need to lift, drag and push files, paper, books and documents weighing up to 50 pounds is also required. Some duties require incumbents to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation.

The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

• Recreation, sports programs/leagues, aquatics, arts and community services standards, practices and resources.
• Principles and practices of program, service and/or facility operations, including the methods and techniques of evaluation and budgeting.
• Office methods, procedures, software, and equipment.

ABILITY TO:

• Assist in the implementation of recreation, aquatics, arts and community services programs, services, and facilities.
• Assist in training and supervising the work of casual part-time and volunteer staff and program participants.
• Learn policies and regulations related to assigned program area.

WILLINGNESS TO:

Work irregular hours or shifts, and on nights, weekends, or holidays when needed.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Some experience in one or more of the following specialty areas: Arts, Customer and Business Services, Special Populations, Seniors and Therapeutics, Sports and Aquatics, and/or Youth and Teen Services.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C CA driver's license and a safe driving record OR the ability to supply alternate transportation as approved by the appointing authority.
