Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent for Recreation Leader III.
  • Two years of paid experience in a recreation program-type setting for Recreation Leader III.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, lead, and assist with a variety of recreation programs and activities that serve all age groups—children, teens, adults, and seniors.
  • Ensure program areas are clean, safe, and equipment is used properly.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in training sessions.
  • Provide administrative and clerical support related to program operations.
  • Administer basic first aid when needed.
  • Operate a City vehicle as assigned.
  • Processing program registrations and facility reservations.
  • Support additional program needs, including: issuing and collecting equipment; setting up and breaking down for activities; leading basic instruction in arts, crafts, sports, and recreation; recording participation and attendance.

PART-TIME RECREATION LEADER II/III

Level II - $18.32/hour Level III - $19.48 - $22.94
Work Schedule: Monday through Fridays (with some Saturdays), not to exceed 25 hours per week; hours and days of the week may vary based on program needs.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Gilroy is currently seeking to fill (3) three part-time Recreation Leader II/III positions, with assignments that include Youth and Adult sports programs, programs based in East Gilroy, adaptive, front office support, reservations, and/or other programs as assigned. The Recreation Leader II/III positions are part-time roles responsible for planning, leading, and supporting recreational, social, and enrichment activities across a variety of program areas.

Depending on departmental needs, availability, and individual skills and experience, Recreation Leaders may also support various other community-based programming and other recreation services. Positions may also provide front-line customer service at the Recreation Office, including assisting with class registration, facility reservations, and general program information. Specific assignments and schedules may vary among the three positions based on operational needs, employee availability, and skill set.

Under the direct supervision of designated supervisor, Recreation Leaders gain valuable hands-on experience in community programs. This position offers opportunities to take on greater responsibilities and grow into higher-level roles within the Recreation Leader series.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL
  • Have experience working with youth, seniors, and/or the public in recreation, community, education, or customer service settings.
  • Demonstrate emotional intelligence and remain calm and professional in a variety of situations.
  • Be energetic and bring enthusiasm to assigned program every day.
  • Have experience leading or assisting with activities such as sports, games, arts and crafts, or group events.
  • Be able to communicate in both English and Spanish; preferred but not required.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and feel comfortable interacting with diverse community members.
  • Be reliable and punctual and have ability to independently manage time.
  • Be responsible to open, prepare, and close facilities on time and ensure the facility is safely used by participants.
  • Be comfortable working in both active recreation settings and office environment.

QUALIFICATIONS
Recreation Leader II

Recreation Leader III
  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Must have experience communicating with parents and the general public.
Recreations Leaders (All Levels)
  • Valid tuberculosis (TB) Certificate
  • May be required to possess and maintain a valid California Driver License along with a safe driving record necessary to operate assigned vehicles (s).
  • Possess (within 12 months of hire) and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR/AED certification.
  • Pass a pre-Employment drug test.
  • Pass an employment background check including a Department of Justice criminal record check.
  • Prefer non-tobacco user.
  • Bilingual (English/ Spanish) a plus.
