Job summary

The City of Sunnyvale seeks qualified, self-motivated individuals to join the Sunnyvale Theatre team. This on-call position requires evenings and weekends, reporting to the Technical Coordinator.

You will staff rentals, operate lighting and sound boards, supervise rentals, and set up/strike equipment. Candidates should have at least a high school diploma, one theatre season of lighting and sound experience, and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1 year or one theatre season of lighting, rigging and sound setup at college level or above.
  • Must be 18 years or older and able to lift 50 lbs as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Staff rentals and City-presented performances on an on-call basis (approx. 4-hour calls).
  • Operate lighting and sound boards during performances.
  • Supervise rentals and assist with setup/strike of equipment.
  • Work as deck crew and train/supervise volunteer staff.
  • Assist with light building and equipment maintenance; follow safety practices.
  • Attend mandatory theater training and adhere to schedules.

Job description

Hours

Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).

The City of Sunnyvale is seeking qualified, self-motivated, energetic, responsible individuals to join our team at the Sunnyvale Theatre, a state-of-the-art, fully equipped, 200-seat venue. Home to a resident theatre company, the facility is also in demand as a rental venue for smaller performing groups, dance and music school recitals, lectures and film screenings. This position is required to work evenings and weekends. This position will report directly to the Technical Coordinator.(May include, but are not limited to, the following):

  • Staffing rentals and City-presented performances on an on-call basis (typical call length is 4 hours)
  • Operating lighting and sound boards during performances
  • Supervising rentals
  • Setting up/striking sound/lighting equipment
  • Working as deck crew
  • Training/supervising volunteer stagehands and house staff as needed
  • Assisting with light building and equipment maintenance
  • Lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders and occasionally work in high or tight spaces
  • Must attend mandatory theater training
  • Minimum age is 18 years old
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Technical theatre experience, including lighting and sound board operation at college or professional level
  • One (1) year or one (1) theater season of experience with theatrical lighting, rigging and sound set up and strike at college level or above
Licenses/Certifications

Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C driver’s license and a safe driving record or the ability to supply alternate transportation as approved by the appointing authority.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to improvise lighting design/general theatrical lighting experience is a plus
  • Sound engineering expertise (live music, theatre)
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin or Farsi
  • Experience interacting with the public
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructionsHave excellent attention to details and deadlines
  • College courses in theater, music, recreation or related classes
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook)
