Job Summary: The Recreation Programmer is responsible for coordinating, developing, and leading a variety of recreation programs, activities, events, and services. This position promotes engaging, inclusive, and family-friendly opportunities for the community while ensuring a safe, welcoming, and positive environment for participants, volunteers, staff, and the public. The Recreation Programmer will also assist with the planning, coordination, and execution of department events for which they are not the lead, providing support as needed to ensure successful and well-organized programs and events.. Major Duties:Oversees participants and volunteers involved in recreation programs, activities, and facilities.Coordinates department events and activities that are inviting, inclusive, engaging, and fulfilling.Assists with the planning, setup, coordination, execution, and breakdown of department events, including events for which the Recreation Programmer is not the lead.Provides support to other department staff during events and programs as assigned to ensure successful operations and a positive participant experience.Accompanies participant groups during special events, field trips, and program outings.Provides feedback and recommendations regarding program development, scheduling, and participant needs.Assists with the development and implementation of fun, community-friendly, family-friendly, and positive ongoing programs and one-time events.Distributes promotional and marketing materials and assists the public with questions, concerns, and general program information.Opens, closes, secures, and maintains a safe and welcoming program environment and facility.Conducts routine safety checks and administer first aid, as required.Attends mandatory pre-service and in-service training sessions, staff meetings, and other departmental meetings.Maintains accurate records and documentation related to assigned activities and programs.Solicits community input and involvement in the planning and delivery of quality, well-rounded recreation programs and activities.Works collaboratively with other Recreation Department staff to support programs, events, and department initiatives.Performs other related duties as assigned.Knowledge Required by the Position:Knowledge of principles, techniques, methods, supplies and equipment applicable to recreation activities.Knowledge of good public relations practices and principles.Knowledge of rules and techniques of common sports and games.Ability to lead and/or supervise activities.Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, and other staff members.Ability to maintain records and create reports.Ability to supervise volunteer workers.Ability to develop creative ideas and artistic concepts that complement outlined designs, themes, and events.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, parents, and children.Supervisory Controls Receives direction from the Director/ Deputy Director.Guidelines: Guidelines include departmental policies and procedures, program standards, safety practices, and applicable rules and regulations.Complexity: The work consists of coordinating and leading a variety of recreational, physical, educational, and community activities involving participants of varying ages and abilities.Scope and Effect: The purpose of this position is to assist in coordinating, developing, and leading recreation programs and activities that provide safe, engaging, and meaningful opportunities for the community. The position also supports the successful planning and execution of department-wide events and initiatives, including events led by other staff members.Physical Demands: The work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Much of the work is physical in nature, including participation in sporting games. The employee may be required to run, walk, jump, and lift heavy objects including sports equipment.Work Environment: The work is typically performed both indoors and outdoors in a variety of recreational and community settings. The position may require working in varied weather conditions and during non-traditional hours. Some evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events are required based on program and department needs.Supervisory and Management Responsibility: This position oversees the work of volunteers, approved partner program staff, and seasonal and/or part-time staff.Minimum Qualifications:High School diploma or equivalent; First Aid and CPR certification; valid State of Georgia Driver’s License. Prefer 3 years experience in a camp or recreation environment is preferred, equivalent combination of education and experience.
