Job summary

City of Santee is seeking a Recreation Programs Supervisor to plan, develop, and implement complex recreational activities and special events. This role provides staff assistance to the Special Events or Recreation Program Supervisor and collaborates across divisions to address business needs.

The position is non-telecommuting and involves coordinating programs, leading staff, and developing promotional materials while overseeing budgets and reporting on program effectiveness.

Qualifications

  • Two years of full-time experience coordinating and supervising special events and recreation programs, volunteers and independent contractors.
  • Develop goals and objectives for recreational programs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates organization, staffing and operational activities for City recreation programs and events.
  • Organizes and coordinates special events and field trips, including transportation for participants.
  • Develops goals and objectives for recreational programs.
  • May lead training and supervision of subordinate staff, volunteers and contractors.
  • Provides input on staff performance and program budgets.
  • Prepares promotional materials such as social media, newsletters, calendars, fliers and brochures.
  • Assists with cost recovery activities and donations where applicable.
  • Communicates information to parents, volunteers, participants and the public regarding events and programs.
  • Develops reports on program effectiveness and new initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job description

Under the direction of a Special Events or Recreation Program Supervisor, this position is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing complex recreational activities, programs and/or special events; providing highly responsible and complex staff assistance to the Special Events or Recreation Program Supervisor(s); and other duties as assigned.

This is a non-telecommuting position.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinates the organization, staffing and operational activities for City recreation programs such as: Teen Center, classes, day camps, special events, sports, senior programs, field trips, and city and park facility usage, permits and rentals;
  • Organizes and coordinates special events and field trips, including transportation for program participants;
  • Develops goals and objectives for recreational programs;
  • May lead in the training and supervision of subordinate recreation staff, volunteers, and independent contractors;
  • Provides input on the performance of subordinate recreation staff;
  • Prepares promotional materials such as social media, newsletters, calendars, fliers, and brochures;
  • Coordinates cost recovery activities, fund raising opportunities and donation solicitation;
  • Communicates necessary information verbally to parents, volunteers, participants and the public related to special events and recreation programs;
  • Provides input on the budget and other administrative matters;
  • Develops reports concerning new or ongoing programs and program effectiveness;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this classification. An example would be:

Education: Equivalent to two years of full-time college level coursework in recreation, public administration, education or closely related field; and

Experience: Two (2) years of recent full-time equivalent (FTE) experience coordinating and supervising special events and recreation programs, subordinate recreation staff, volunteers and independent contractors.

Up to two years of additional related full-time equivalent work experience may be substituted for the college-level coursework.

*Recent experience is defined as relevant experience obtained within the last 10 years.

*2 years of full-time college level coursework is defined as 48 semester units or 72 quarter units.
