Job summary

The City of Grand Rapids seeks a Recreation Program Technical Supervisor for GR Outside & General Recreation to oversee nature-based programs, outdoor activities, and community outreach, coordinating staff, facilities, and program quality.

Minimum education includes two years of college coursework in recreation or related field (4-year degree preferred); at least two years of recreation leadership experience and a Michigan driver’s license are required.

Qualifications

• Two years of college coursework in recreation administration or closely related field (4-year degree preferred).
• Two or more years of responsible experience as a recreation leader or administrator.
• Michigan driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Interacts with the Risk Manager for compliance and mitigation resources.
• Plans, coordinates and oversees all aspects of assigned recreation programs, including scheduling staff and facilities, program content, length and budget requirements, and coordination with outside user groups.
• Responds to participant and potential participant questions, concerns and complaints.
• Interacts with departmental administrative staff on questions regarding scheduling, programs, operations and enrollments.
• Conducts participant and other surveys of recreational program and program needs as needed, developing performance metrics and KPIs.
• Researches trends and new programs for design and implementation for program development, quality and growth.
• Studies recreation needs and recommends changes and/or improvements to existing programs; creates new programs and activities based on demand and need.
• Performs other work as assigned.

Recreation Program Technical Supervisor - GR Outside & General Recreation

Nature of Work This is supervisory, professional work in overseeing and coordinating recreation initiatives, outdoor programs, and community outreach for the GR Outside program. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor to provide program management supervision. Work includes planning, organizing, and directing nature-based experiences, outdoor skill-building, camping/backpacking trips, outdoor gear library distribution, community partnership operations focused on expanding nature access for youth (ages 24 and under) and schools across Grand Rapids, and other general recreation programs as assigned. Participates with the Recreation Supervisor to select, hire, and supervise non-permanent support staff, field instructors, and seasonal program staff. Minimum Training and Experience
Required Education and Experience

• Two (2) years of college coursework or university training (4-year degree preferred) in recreation administration, public administration or closely related field plus

--AND--

• Two (2) or more years of responsible experience as a recreation leader or administrator

--OR--

• Any equivalent combination of training

Required Licenses

• Michigan driver’s license
• Preferred Experience
• Outdoor recreation, youth sports, or general recreation programming
