Job summary

City of Muskegon is seeking a Recreation Programs Manager to oversee community recreation programs, including sports, youth and seniors, and instructional classes. You will coordinate staff, recruit volunteers, promote offerings, and monitor program quality.

The role involves budgeting, equipment and inventory control, and ensuring smooth use of facilities. A related bachelor’s degree is preferred with 2 years of supervisory recreation experience and a Michigan driver’s license.

• Two years of increasingly responsible technical and supervisory experience in recreation programs.
• Valid Michigan motor vehicle operator’s license.

Responsibilities

• Plan and organize assigned recreation activities in sports, aquatics, youth, seniors, instructional classes, or recreation programs, events, and activities.
• Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise program staff and program volunteers.
• Promote Parks and Recreation Department programs; prepare class and schedule information and marketing materials.
• Oversee and monitor the quality of programs, events, and classes; reevaluate annually for improvement.
• Prepare and control equipment inventory and stock deliveries; order and maintain equipment and materials.
• Develop and administer program budgets and monitor expenses; provide input to the department budget.
• Maintain records and develop reports concerning new or ongoing programs and program effectiveness.
• Process contractor and vendor payments; collect and account for program fees and registrations.
• Oversee facility usage; explain policies, monitor and secure facilities after use.
• Respond to inquiries from the public and provide information about the recreational program area.
• May assist with special event application approvals.

Education

Job description

Under the direction of the Parks & Recreation Director, oversees and coordinates the operations and services of assigned community recreation programs, including sports, youth, seniors, instructional classes, and recreation programs, events, and activities. Assesses needs, plans, implements, supervises, and evaluates programs and program staff.

1. Plan and organize assigned recreation activities in the areas of sports, aquatics, youth, seniors, instructional classes, or recreation programs, events, and activities. Collaborate with other city departments and organization to ensure the success of programs. Develop new programs and activities by researching trends, gathering community requests, and evaluating community needs. Participate in continuing education opportunities to stay current.
2. Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise program staff and program volunteers to assist with community programs and events.
3. Promote Parks and Recreation Department programs; prepare class and schedule information and marketing using brochures, the department website, social media, or other materials and methods. Assist in developing and implementing a comprehensive and consistent marketing plan for department offerings.
4. Observe and monitor the quality of programs, events, and classes. Reevaluate annually for the improvement of program goals and objectives.
5. Prepare and control equipment inventory and stock deliveries. Order, inspect, and maintain recreation equipment and materials.
6. Develop and administer programs budgets and monitor expenses. Provide input in the preparation of the department budget.
7. Maintain records and develop reports concerning new or ongoing programs and program effectiveness. Prepare statistical reports as required.
8. Process contractor and vendor payments. Collect and account for program fees and registrations. Maintain appropriate financial records.
9. Oversee and schedule usage of assigned facilities; provide information and assistance to users of facilities; explain policies, rules and regulations of facility use. Monitor and inspect assigned facilities after use; schedule maintenance and secure facilities.
10. Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public. Provide information regarding assigned recreational program area. Analyze customer inquiries and determine steps necessary to resolve issues.
11. May assist with special event application approvals.
12. Performs other related work as required.
