Job summary

The City of Temple City is seeking seasonal help in the Parks and Recreation Department for May–August 2026. You will assist in a variety of recreation programs, set up equipment, supervise participants, and help with administrative tasks at the front counter.

Minimum age is 16 with a valid work permit if applicable; volunteer or paid experience in recreation is desirable. This role includes part-time hours and sick leave benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Provide general assistance within assigned recreation programs including activities for children and youth.

  • Assist chaperones on field trips and supervise activities under direct supervision.

Job description

DEFINITION

The City of Temple City is hiring for seasonal employment within the Parks and Recreation Department. Seasonal positions will begin in May 2026 and conclude in August 2026. There may be opportunities for extended, year around employment based on program needs.

Under direct supervision assists the Senior Recreation Leaders in providing general assistance and support to assigned recreation program and activities; sets up and issues equipment for recreational activities; assists in providing on-site supervision of recreation program and activity participants; and performs a variety of general and routine administrative tasks in support of recreation programs. The recruitment will remain open until filled.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Provides general assistance within an assigned recreation program including preschool, sports, special events, after school programs, day camps, arts and crafts, or other recreation programs.
  • Assists in providing on-site supervision to program participants.
  • Assists program participants in recreation activities in assigned areas.
  • Assists in preparing recreational facilities for use including ensuring that appropriate equipment and supplies are available for classes and events.
  • Sets up and takes down equipment; issues and collects recreation equipment and supplies.
  • Assists as directed in an instructional setting including playground supervision, classroom work, and assisting children with a variety of problems and questions.
  • Assists chaperones on field trips and outings.
  • Coaches and umpires organized games and sports activities.
  • Assists in the encouragement of participation and good sportsmanship.
  • Responds to public inquires in a courteous manner.
  • Provides information within the area of assignment.
  • Performs a variety of routine office work including assisting at the front counter and answering phones.
Desirable Qualifications
Knowledge of:
  • Basic operations, services and activities of a recreation program.
  • General sports and recreational activities and programs including the techniques, rules and equipment used in various sports, games and special events.
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures within the area of assignment.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Methods and techniques of first aid and CPR.
  • Policies and procedures relating to the safety of participants.
  • Basic rules and regulations governing competitive group athletic games and sporting events.
Ability To
  • Provide general assistance and support for assigned recreation programs and activities.
  • Organize and supervise a variety of activities at various types of sites recognizing the basic needs of those involved in the programs.
  • Effectively interact with the public and City staff; set up and take down equipment for programs and special events.
  • Respond to emergency situations and administer first aid and CPR as necessary.
  • Perform duties outdoors involving walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting.
  • Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions utilizing the English language.
  • Get from one location to another in the course of doing business.
  • Maintain enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Must be at least 16 years of age at time of application; education at a level that provides the ability to read and understand instructions; those attending high school must acquire a valid work permit issued by the local Board of Education, if applicable; a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer or paid experience in the recreation field is desirable.

Physical Demands

Ability to operate a telephone and copying machine.

Ability to understand and respond to the public and staff's requests for assistance both on the telephone and in person.

Ability to sit, stand, stoop or bend, and see. Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.

The City participates in a federally mandated retirement program whereby part-time employees contribute 7.5% of their salary into a deferred compensation plan (monies paid into this plan will be returned to the employee approximately two to three months following separation at the employees’ discretion.)
