Job summary

City of South El Monte is seeking an enthusiastic Recreation Assistant to support the delivery of youth and community programs. You will help supervise activities, set up facilities, assist staff and volunteers, and ensure safety and compliance with park rules.

Responsibilities include helping with events, assisting with equipment, and performing light custodial duties while maintaining a friendly, inclusive environment for participants and families.

Qualifications

• Enrollment in high school with a work permit or graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
• First Aid/CPR certification issued by an authorized agency within 90 days of employment.
• Valid California Class C driver’s license and proof of insurability.

About The Positions:

Under direction from the Recreation Coordinator, assists Senior Recreation Leader(s) in the delivery of the City’s recreation programs, youth/adult sports, senior services, and special events; assists in organizing and setting up recreational facilities, activity areas and equipment; performs other duties as assigned. Supervision is received from the Recreation Coordinator. Supervision is not exercised by this classification.

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Instructs and coaches sports; monitors activities of participants to ensure that park rules and regulations are followed, and that equipment is used in a safe manner.
• Assists in maintaining recreational facilities by performing light custodial care.
• Performs activities involved in a community recreation program.
• Delivers a variety of parks and programs, services, and special events as directed.
• Provides support to staff and contract instructors.
• Enforces City regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Assists with setting up, taking down furniture, materials, and equipment.
• Reports safety concerns, emergencies, or accidents in accordance with established procedures.
• Administers First Aid as needed.
• Responds to inquiries about facility usage, program, activity, and event specifics.
• Operates City vehicles as required.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Experience:

One (1) year of experience, paid or volunteer, working with children or community in recreational settings.

Education:

• Current enrollment in High School; must have a work permit and or graduation from High School or GED equivalent.
• Valid First Aid/CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency or its equivalent within 90 days of employment.

Additional Requirements/Information:

• Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and proof of insurability.
• May be required to drive a city vehicle to transport equipment.
• May work weekends and holidays.
• May require bilingual skills.

Licenses and Certifications:

• Valid California Class C driver’s license as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Demands:

• Frequently required to walk, run, sit and talk or hear.
• Occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls;
• Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.
• Occasionally required to climb or balance.
• Must stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Vision abilities required to include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Working Conditions:

• Frequently works in outside weather conditions.
• Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and toxic or caustic chemicals.
• Noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud when in the field.
