Job summary

Strength In Peers seeks a Peer Recovery Specialist to support individuals in Harrisonburg, VA, using lived experience to foster recovery and resilience. The role focuses on helping participants articulate goals, learn coping skills, navigate services, and advocate for their needs.

The position is full-time, non-exempt, Monday–Friday 9am–5pm, with occasional evenings or weekends for events. Training is provided and experience in recovery is valued.

Qualifications

• Identify as a person in active recovery from substance use, mental health, and trauma.
• Able to connect with others and inspire confidence.
• Able to communicate effectively in writing and interpersonal settings.
• Strong knowledge of computer applications for data entry, word processing, email, and internet navigation.
• Driver's license required.
• Criminal background check required.

Responsibilities

• Provide peer support services to individuals seeking recovery.
• Educate individuals about pathways to recovery and available services.
• Help navigate community services for health care, housing, employment.
• Assist participants to apply for Medicaid, other public benefits, rental housing, and employment.
• Support participants to adhere to the requirements of other agencies, such as probation/parole, child protective services, etc.
• Collaborate with case managers, counsellors, and other providers to plan and coordinate services to mutual participants.
• Transport and accompany participants to appointments and community resources.
• Facilitate peer support groups and workshops.
• Collect and report data on activities and participant outcomes.
