Job Summary
Provides courteous and professional service to customers and Animal Control Officers bringing in animals. Assists Animal Control with intake, maintains accurate intake records, assists clients with lost pets, and performs reclaim procedures. Performs financial transactions as necessary following procedures.
Essential Duties & Functions
- Greet customers and Animal Control Officers warmly upon entry.
- Answer inquiries and provide accurate information.
- Receive owner surrendered and stray animals, charge fees, and record details in the system.
- Ensure animals receive routine exams and intake protocols, alert veterinary staff of concerns.
- Photograph animals upon arrival and upload images.
- Create kennel cards and place animals in appropriate housing promptly.
- Offer alternatives to relinquishment for owner surrender inquiries.
- Assist owners of lost animals, reference relevant materials, and advise on locating pets.
- Match animals with owners, check community posts, and handle return transactions with proof of ownership.
- Handle euthanasia and cremation requests respectfully.
- Maintain a courteous, empathetic, and professional demeanor with all customers and partners.
- Monitor and return phone calls promptly.
- Keep the receiving area clean, stocked, and organized.
- Ensure office supplies and equipment are maintained and report needs.
- Stay informed on pet guardianship, animal care, and local ordinances to assist customers.
- Complete opening and closing checklists and cash reconciliations daily.
- Promote the Society’s mission, services, and events.
- Encourage donations and support organizational activities.
- Report safety concerns and participate in problem solving.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills
- Availability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
- Ability to work with all animal species and knowledge of animal health and welfare best practices.
- Strong fear-free handling skills.
- Outgoing, polite, and professional demeanor.
- Team player capable of working in a fast-paced environment and multitasking.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Proficiency in Windows-based computer applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Chameleon.
- Math skills sufficient for handling cash transactions.
- Ability to prioritize, multitask, and work under stress.
- Strong organizational skills with high accuracy and attention to detail.
- Support the Society’s mission and act as an advocate for animals.
Education/Certification
- High school diploma or equivalent; college experience preferred.
- Proficiency in Windows applications; ability to complete Fear Free for Shelter certification within 60 days.
Experience and Knowledge
Experience in animal welfare is useful but not essential; customer service experience is required.
