Job summary

The Toro Company in Minnesota seeks an E4 engineer to own traction-control and drivetrain software, integrating controllers and ensuring safe, reliable machine performance. You will connect software, electronics, and controls across multiple Toro programs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Software, Electrical, Computer, Controls, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field.
• 7+ years of experience developing embedded software for controls, electronics, mobile equipment, automotive systems, industrial systems, or related products.
• Demonstrated experience solving complex system-level problems and delivering embedded features across multiple projects and priorities.
• Experience integrating motor controllers, inverters, hydraulic controllers, or other supplier-provided electronic control units is strongly preferred.
• Experience with mobile machinery, off-highway equipment, automotive drivetrain systems, or safety-related machine controls is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Own embedded software and system integration for traction-control functions and drivetrain controllers across multiple machine programs.
• Apply closed-loop control concepts, state machines, diagnostics, calibration, and real-time software to improve machine response and controllability.
• Lead the technical integration and lifecycle management of third-party motor controllers and other drivetrain electronic control units.
• Validate control behavior on machines and use test data to resolve system-level issues involving software, electronics, motors, sensors, networks, and mechanical loads.
• Design, develop, debug, and release embedded software for traction-control and drivetrain systems.
• Develop and tune control strategies for propulsion, speed and torque requests, direction control, limits, interlocks, derating, and fault responses.
• Integrate electric or hydraulic motor-control components with Toro machine controllers, sensors, operator controls, and vehicle networks.
• Own technical interfaces to third-party drivetrain controllers, including requirements, network messages, configuration, calibration, diagnostics, firmware compatibility, and change control.
• Partner with suppliers to review controller capabilities, resolve defects, manage software or firmware updates, and verify that delivered components meet Toro system requirements.
• Apply machine-network communication best practices to deliver robust, deterministic, real-time behavior, with emphasis on CAN-based systems and J1939 where applicable.
• Define system and software requirements, interface specifications, acceptance criteria, and verification plans for drivetrain functions.
• Analyze complex system-level issues across multiple projects and priorities using logs, network traces, measurements, simulation, bench testing, and machine testing.
• Prototype and validate designs for performance, safety, reliability, diagnostics, and applicable compliance requirements.
• Collaborate with systems, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, test, manufacturing, service, and product teams throughout the product lifecycle.
• Contribute to technical planning by refining backlogs, estimating work, identifying risks and dependencies, and supporting pipeline-based development and release processes.
• Mentor less-experienced engineers and provide technical guidance in embedded controls, drivetrain integration, debugging, and engineering practices.
• Document designs, calibrations, interfaces, test evidence, production processes, and service diagnostics to support successful product launches and field support.
