Job summary

The Toro Company, headquartered in Bloomington, MN, seeks an experienced E4 Embedded Systems Engineer to own traction-control and drivetrain software across multiple machine programs. You will integrate third‑party controllers, apply real‑time control concepts, and validate performance on real equipment.

Job Purpose

This E4 role provides technical ownership of traction control, electric and hydraulic motor‑control integration, and third‑party controllers within the drivetrain. Your work will connect software, electronics, controls, and machine behavior to deliver safe, reliable, and high‑performing Toro products.

What Will You Do

• Drivetrain Ownership: Own embedded software and system integration for traction‑control functions and drivetrain controllers across multiple machine programs.
• Controls‑Focused Engineering: Apply closed‑loop control concepts, state machines, diagnostics, calibration, and real‑time software to improve machine response and controllability.
• Supplier Controller Integration: Lead the technical integration and lifecycle management of third‑party motor controllers and other drivetrain electronic control units.
• Real‑World Results: Validate control behavior on machines and use test data to resolve system‑level issues involving software, electronics, motors, sensors, networks, and mechanical loads.
• Design, develop, debug, and release embedded software for traction‑control and drivetrain systems.
• Develop and tune control strategies for propulsion, speed and torque requests, direction control, limits, interlocks, derating, and fault responses.
• Integrate electric or hydraulic motor‑control components with Toro machine controllers, sensors, operator controls, and vehicle networks.
• Own technical interfaces to third‑party drivetrain controllers, including requirements, network messages, configuration, calibration, diagnostics, firmware compatibility, and change control.
• Partner with suppliers to review controller capabilities, resolve defects, manage software or firmware updates, and verify that delivered components meet Toro system requirements.
• Apply machine‑network communication best practices to deliver robust, deterministic, real‑time behavior, with emphasis on CAN‑based systems and J1939 where applicable.
• Define system and software requirements, interface specifications, acceptance criteria, and verification plans for drivetrain functions.
• Analyze complex system‑level issues across multiple projects and priorities using logs, network traces, measurements, simulation, bench testing, and machine testing.
• Prototype and validate designs for performance, safety, reliability, diagnostics, and applicable compliance requirements.
• Collaborate with systems, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, test, manufacturing, service, and product teams throughout the product lifecycle.
• Contribute to technical planning by refining backlogs, estimating work, identifying risks and dependencies, and supporting pipeline‑based development and release processes.
• Mentor less‑experienced engineers and provide technical guidance in embedded controls, drivetrain integration, debugging, and engineering practices.
• Document designs, calibrations, interfaces, test evidence, production processes, and service diagnostics to support successful product launches and field support.

What Do You Need

• Bachelor's degree in Software, Electrical, Computer, Controls, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field.
• 7+ years of experience developing embedded software for controls, electronics, mobile equipment, automotive systems, industrial systems, or related products.
• Demonstrated experience solving complex system‑level problems and delivering embedded features across multiple projects and priorities.
• Experience integrating motor controllers, inverters, hydraulic controllers, or other supplier‑provided electronic control units is strongly preferred.
• Experience with mobile machinery, off‑highway equipment, automotive drivetrain systems, or safety‑related machine controls is preferred.

Technology & Skills

• Advanced embedded software development skills for 16/32‑bit microcontrollers using C and C++.
• Strong understanding of real‑time software, RTOS concepts, interrupts, scheduling, memory constraints, and hardware/software integration.
• Practical knowledge of motor‑control and traction‑control concepts, including torque and speed control, feedback loops, sensor processing, ramping, limiting, calibration, and fault handling.
• Experience with CAN communications, network diagnostics, and protocol‑based interfaces; J1939 experience is preferred.
• Familiarity with SPI and I2C is beneficial.
• Ability to interpret electrical schematics, controller documentation, communication specifications, and motor or inverter interface requirements.
• Experience with measurement and debugging tools such as CAN analyzers, oscilloscopes, data loggers, debuggers, hardware‑in‑the‑loop systems, or equivalent tools.
• Knowledge of functional safety, hazard‑based design, defensive software, diagnostics, and verification methods for machine‑control systems.
• Experience with Git, Azure DevOps, pipelines, automated builds, code reviews, work‑item backlogs, and iterative development in a Scrum environment.
• Strong technical leadership, supplier communication, problem‑solving, documentation, and cross‑functional collaboration skills.

• Competitive Salary – The pay range takes into account skills, experience, education, and location. It is not common to be hired at or near the top of the range; compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the annual pay range is between $111,400 - $139,200. Cash compensation is one piece of our competitive total rewards package. You may be eligible to participate in an incentive program, which rewards employees based on individual and organizational performance.
