Job summary

Monroe #1 BOCES is seeking a part-time 10-month Deaf Ed/Audiology/Vision captionist in Fairport, NY. The role focuses on providing real-time captioning for students and preparing high-quality notes for daily use.

Main duties include class-based transcription, post-class editing, and distribution of notes tailored to individual student needs, with emphasis on accuracy and confidentiality. Training and ongoing collaboration with staff are required.

Qualifications

• Typing speed of at least 50 words per minute.
• Ability to process auditory information quickly and condense as necessary.
• High-level English skills, with emphasis on phonetic aptitude.
• Able to work independently, with a variety of children and adults.
• Able to make decisions quickly in impromptu situations.
• Able to adapt to a variety of subjects and teaching styles and to interpret lessons into clear, concise notes.
• Good working knowledge of computers (Windows OS, word processing, email).
• Able to work with computer technicians to troubleshoot PC issues.
• Experience working in a classroom setting.
• Desire to work with students who are deaf/hard of hearing or students with disabilities.
• Legible handwriting.
• Bachelor's degree (preferred).
• Physically able to perform essential functions of the position (with or without reasonable accommodation).

Responsibilities

• Provide students with real-time captioning and prepare complete, accurate notes daily.
• Type real-time translations of classroom dialogue and edit notes for content, spelling, and grammar.
• Save and edit notes after class, ensuring content matches student needs.
• Adapt notetaking format to each student’s needs and redistribute notes accordingly.
• Be present and punctual for all class periods throughout the academic year.
• Familiarize with the assigned client/student and related staff.
• Prepare for classes by reading course material and updating the C-Print dictionary.
• Manage computers and troubleshoot as needed.
• Maintain confidentiality and coordinate with teachers and staff as appropriate.
• Meet with teachers/parents/staff as needed.
• Respond to questions and provide information about deafness as needed.
• Maintain schedules and student records for Deaf Education office.
• Read and respond to emails daily.
• Attend training sessions and staff meetings as agreed with supervisor.
