Job description

Local News Community Officer (Part-time), County Durham

Help people across County Durham tell their own local news. From Consett and Stanley to Durham, Chester-le-Street, Weardale and Teesdale, Firefly's local magazines carry stories written by the people who live there. Your job is to get schools, young people, community groups and local businesses telling theirs, on camera and on the page.

You will run regular sessions and events in your patch, help first-timers (from residents to local businesses) publish on our platform, get out and about meeting the groups and businesses that matter, and be the friendly face in the short phone clips and social posts that show people what is possible. No journalism experience needed: you help people tell their own stories.

Pay 1,050 to 1,175 pounds a month for about 9 days a month, depending on experience, plus 28 days holiday a year pro rata including bank holidays, and a workplace pension. Travel and expenses paid, mileage at 45p a mile. Fixed-term employed, 1 November 2026 to 19 March 2027, start date by agreement. This role works with schools and young people, so the offer is conditional on an Enhanced DBS check, arranged and paid by us.
