Job summary

AECOM in Sacramento, CA seeks a Project Engineer, Communications to lead railway communications engineering on a major transportation project. This on-site role supports fiber networks, IP/MPLS, radio, CCTV, and regulatory coordination, with travel 25–50% along the alignment.

You will prepare and review engineering deliverables, manage interfaces with signaling, power, SCADA, IT teams, and help develop test plans from design through commissioning, ultimately achieving final acceptance of system

Qualifications

• BA/BS + 6 years of relevant experience or equivalent education
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field preferred
• Experience taking communications systems from design through testing, commissioning, and final acceptance
• Experience developing and reviewing engineering deliverables on large transportation infrastructure projects
• Strong working knowledge of systems integration and operational railway communications applications
• Experience supporting requirements management, system architecture development, and interface definition
• Experience reviewing supplier and contractor designs, network designs, and telecommunications documentation

Responsibilities

• Prepare, review, and approve communications engineering deliverables across design, construction, and testing/commissioning
• Ensure technical documentation is complete, coordinated, and developed per standards
• Support requirements management, system architecture development, and interface definition activities
• Review supplier and contractor designs for compliance with program specifications
• Coordinate interfaces between communications, signaling, traction power, SCADA, stations, IT teams
• Provide technical oversight for fiber optic networks, operational telecommunications, and IP/MPLS networks
• Provide technical oversight for Operations Control Center communications, wayside radio, maintenance radio, and dispatch systems
• Develop and review test plans, procedures, and commissioning strategies for communications systems
• Support regulatory approvals, FCC licensing, and spectrum management
• Coordinate with regulators, telecom providers, operators, and stakeholders for approvals
• Address regulatory review comments and closeout actions
• Support testing regimes including FAT, SAT, SIT, network validation, and operational trials
• Coordinate defect management and final system handover
