Job summary

Amtrak seeks a Passenger Engineer Trainee in Lincoln, NE to safely operate locomotives and trains under federal regulations and corporate policies, maintaining alertness and using clear verbal communication with crew and staff for safe movement.

Selected candidates will complete 8–10 weeks of classroom and field training at Amtrak’s Training Center in Wilmington, DE, followed by extensive on‑the‑job training at the Crew Base until certification as a Class 1 Train Service Engineer.

Qualifications

• H.S. Diploma or GED Required.
• Some work experience demonstrates alertness and clear verbal communication.
• Driver’s license not required; if held, will require DOT-compliant review.
• Engineer Training includes 8–10 weeks classroom/field work at Wilmington, DE; paid training rate until certification.

Responsibilities

• Operate locomotives and trains safely in compliance with regulations.
• Maintain alertness and situational awareness during 24/7 operations.
• Communicate clearly with crew members and other personnel responsible for safe movement.
