Job summary

Amtrak is seeking a Passenger Conductor Trainee in Washington, DC. You will learn safe train operations, assist the Conductor, and support on‑board activities across corridor and non‑corridor assignments.

The role demands adaptability, physical endurance, and strong communication as you join a union team with a demanding on‑call schedule. You will undergo seven to eight weeks of comprehensive training in Wilmington, DE, transitioning to on‑the‑job training at your Crew base, with assignments

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Two years of full‑time verifiable work experience and/or college coursework (combo accepted).
• Must live within a 2‑hour commute of the Crew Base.
• Ability to lift 50lbs and meet FRA vision, color vision, and hearing standards as specified in 49 CFR 242.
• Driver’s license not required, but if you have one you must clear a motor vehicle record per DOT regulations.

Responsibilities

• Support the safe, efficient operation of trains by assisting the Conductor with train movements and safety rules execution.
• Enforce safety procedures and assist passengers during boarding and detraining.
• Perform yard operations and assist with train assembly and inspection activities.
• Coordinate with crew, dispatchers, and customers to manage service plans and disruptions.
• Communicate clearly and professionally, maintaining documentation of delays, incidents, and issues.
