Job summary

Norfolk Southern invites applications for the Freight Car Repairer Trainee role. This hands-on, field-based program provides classroom instruction and on-the-job training to inspect, repair, and maintain railcars to ensure safe operations across the network.

The position is seniority-based and union, with shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. Travel for training may be extensive; union membership is required within 60 days of establishing seniority.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform heavy physical labor.
• Must pass background screening and post-offer medical examinations.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, and maintain freight cars per FRA and AAR standards.
• Ensure compliance with railroad safety and operations rules.
• Perform welding and cutting (SMAW and FCAW) in 2F-4F positions.
• Operate forklifts, cranes, and car-moving equipment.
• Replace wheels, couplers, brake equipment, valves, yokes, and draft gears.
• Rerail cars and locomotives using rerailing equipment; document data in systems.
• Maintain safety by using PPE and completing safety training.
