Job summary

Norfolk Southern invites applicants for a Freight Car Repairer Trainee role, a hands-on, field-based program with classroom and on-the-job training. The position prepares individuals for a career in freight car maintenance, inspecting, repairing, and maintaining railcars to ensure safe operations.

The program includes classroom safety orientation and craft training, with lodging provided and travel reimbursed per union agreement.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.
18 years of age or older.
Valid driver’s license.
Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform heavy physical labor.
Must pass background screening and post-offer medical examinations, including drug tests.

Responsibilities

Inspect, repair, and maintain freight cars in compliance with FRA and AAR standards.
Ensure compliance with railroad rules and safety requirements.
Perform welding and cutting operations (SMAW and FCAW in 2F, 3F, 4F).
Operate forklifts, cranes, and car-moving equipment.
May need to obtain a CDL for Locomotive Service truck operation.
Fabricate and replace parts such as grab irons, ladders, and steps.
Remove defective components and rerail cars and locomotives.
Enter repair records and car data in computer systems.
