Job summary

Norfolk Southern invites applications for a Freight Car Repairer Trainee role. This hands-on, field-based program trains you to inspect, repair, and maintain railcars, helping ensure safe, efficient operations across the network.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform heavy physical labor.
• Must pass background screening and post-offer medical examinations, including drug tests.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, and maintain freight cars in compliance with FRA and AAR standards.
• Ensure compliance with railroad safety & operations rules.
• Perform welding and cutting operations (SMAW and FCAW in 2F, 3F, 4F).
• Operate forklifts, cranes, and car-moving equipment.
• Possibly obtain CDL for Locomotive Service truck operation.
• Fabricate/replace steel parts like grab irons, ladders, sill steps.
• Remove defective components including wheels, brakes, yokes, and draft gears.
• Rerail cars & locomotives; enter repair data into computer systems.
• Wear protective equipment and complete safety training & exams.
