Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corp. is seeking a Freight Car Repairer Trainee to learn inspection, repair, and maintenance of freight cars through classroom and field training. The role is union-based, requires shifts including nights and weekends, and involves travel for training across the network.

The program covers welding and fabrication disciplines, field shop work, and safety requirements. Lodging is provided; travel is reimbursed per union agreement.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must pass pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and medical examinations.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform heavy physical labor.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, and maintain freight cars in compliance with FRA and AAR standards.
• Ensure compliance with railroad safety and operating rules.
• Perform welding and cutting operations (SMAW and FCAW in multiple positions).
• Operate forklifts, cranes, and car-moving equipment.
• Rerail cars and locomotives; enter repair records in computer systems.
