Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corp., a leading freight transportation company, invites applications for a Freight Car Repairer Trainee. This hands-on, field-based program combines classroom safety and craft training with field practice in welding, fabrication, and car maintenance.

Trainees learn to inspect, repair, and maintain freight cars, with lodging and travel reimbursement per union agreement. Union membership is required and shifts include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Must pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform heavy physical labor.
• Must pass background screening and post-offer medical examinations, including drug tests.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, and maintain freight cars in compliance with FRA and AAR standards.
• Ensure compliance with railroad safety and operating rules.
• Perform welding and cutting operations.
• Operate forklifts, cranes, and car-moving equipment.
• Rerail cars and locomotives using rerailing equipment.
• Enter repair records and car details into computer systems.
