Job summary

Norfolk Southern invites applications for a Freight Car Repairer Trainee. This seniority-based union position requires readiness to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with extensive training travel as part of the program.

You will learn welding, fabrication, and hands-on car repair in a structured environment. Training spans classroom and field instruction with lodging and travel reimbursement per union agreement.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED (required).
• 18 years of age or older (required).
• Valid driver's license (required).
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, and maintain freight cars per FRA and AAR standards.
• Operate welding/cutting (SMAW and FCAW) in 2F, 3F, 4F positions.
• Operate forklifts, cranes, and car-moving equipment.
• Rerail cars and locomotives using rerailing equipment.
• Complete and enter data in computer systems for car records and releases.
• Follow safety rules and wear PPE at all times.
