Job summary

Norfolk Southern invites applications for a Freight Car Repairer Trainee. This seniority-based union position trains individuals in inspection, repair, and maintenance of railcars with classroom and field instruction. The role includes night shifts, travel for training, and union membership within 60 days of starting work.

Trainees will learn welding and fabrication, and may be asked to obtain a CDL. Lodging is provided and travel is reimbursed per union agreement.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Able to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather and perform heavy physical labor.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, and maintain freight cars in compliance with FRA and AAR standards.
• Operate forklifts, cranes, and car-moving equipment.
• Record repair data and maintain safety procedures.
