Job summary

Genesee & Wyoming Main is seeking an experienced carman to ensure safety, compliance, and efficient operation of freight cars across yard and road assignments.

You will inspect components, perform maintenance and repairs, document repairs for billing, and support rerailing and other on-site projects in all weather. CDL preferred; high school diploma or GED required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Welding certification is required.
• CDL license preferred.
• Four-year journeyman carman preferred.
• Age 18 or older.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with railroad rules and FRA safety standards.
• Inspect car components per AAR, FRA, and company standards.
• Perform maintenance including air brake tests.
• Repair or replace defective components and weld parts.
• Prepare repair reports and monthly billing records.
• Perform rerailing, emergency repairs, and yard/road work.
• Operate hand tools, jacks, and car-moving equipment.
• Inspect and secure cargo in open-top cars.
• Assist with other projects as assigned.
