Job summary

Interstate Waste Services in the New Jersey/New York area is seeking a Rail Conductor responsible for coordinating railcar movements, signaling, and switching within yard limits. This role requires precise adherence to safety and railroad regulations while operating with tablet technology and in outdoor environments.

The ideal candidate brings at least 1 year of rail conducting experience, a high school diploma or GED, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of rail conducting experience.
  • High school/GED education completed; higher education is a plus.
  • Must be able to lift/push/pull at least 50 pounds.
  • Able to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and environments.
  • Ability to utilize technology in the form of a tablet or computer.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct railcar and train movements; signal crew members for movement.
  • Observe, interpret and relay arm, lantern or radio signals and all indications affecting movement.
  • Operate track switches to change the direction of the engine or cars within yard limits or on the main line; apply/release air brakes.
  • Inspect the condition of the train and equipment in movement and when stationary.
  • Couple air connections between railcars and movers when making up trains.
  • Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, FRA rules and regulations for safety and operations.
  • Monitor track conditions and report issues.
  • Perform ER checks using a tablet/computer for arriving/departing trains.
