Job summary

Interstate Waste Services, Inc. is seeking an Overnight Rail Conductor for the B Shift (7:30pm–6:00am) to support rail movements and yard operations. The role requires attention to signals, track switches, and equipment inspections while working in outdoor conditions.

Applicants must be 18+, capable of lifting 50 pounds, and have at least 1 year of rail-conducting experience or related training. Tablets or computers will be used for ER checks and dispatch.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to work 18+ years and be legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Ability to use tablet/computer for operations and documentation.
  • Experience in rail-conducting is preferred but not required if otherwise qualified.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct railcar and train movements and signal crew using lantern, hand, or radio signals.
  • Observe and relay signals affecting movement of trains.
  • Operate track switches and apply/release hand brakes as needed.
  • Inspect train and equipment in movement and at rest.
  • Follow FRA, OSHA, and railroad safety rules and wear PPE.
  • Monitor track conditions and report issues.
  • Perform ER checks using tablet/computer for arrivals/departures.

  • Conduct railcar and train movements; signal crew members for movement of the engine or train using lantern, hand, and/or flag signals or radio toindicatewhen to start, stop, back up, or set or release air brakes

  • Observe, interpret, and relay arm, lantern or radio signals and all other indications affecting movement of a train

  • Operate track switches (visually check switch condition and direction) to change the direction of the engine or cars within yard limits or on the main railroad; apply or release hand brakes to switch or perform other duties

  • Inspect the condition of the train and equipment in movement and while stationary

  • Couple air connections betweenrailcars and railcar moverswhen making up trains

  • Assistwith other projects and perform other duties as assigned

  • Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)

  • Monitor track conditionsand report any issues

  • Perform ER checksutilizingtechnology in the form of a tabletand/or computer for all arriving anddepartingtrains

  • Follow OSHA safety standards and wear required PPE

Requirements and Qualifications:
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the United States.

  • Ability toutilizetechnology in the form of a tablet and/or computer

  • High school/GED education completed, higher education is a plus

  • Must be able tolift/push/pullat least50pounds

  • Minimum 1 year ofrail conductingexperience

  • Able to work in an outdoor environment on a constant basis while being exposed to variable weather conditions, temperatures, chemicals, dust, fumes, smells, and loud noises.
