Burns Engineering, Inc. is seeking a Director of Business Development for the Railroad & Transit practice in a hybrid, client-facing capacity.

You will drive strategic growth by identifying, pursuing, and securing new opportunities while strengthening relationships with key clients, agencies, and industry partners. The role requires leadership in market strategy, capture efforts, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Qualifications

  • 8-10+ years of relevant business development experience in Rail and/or Transit
  • Demonstrated success in winning and growing client relationships
  • Established network within rail and transit agencies and industry partners
  • Strong understanding of mass transit policies, programs, and funding mechanisms
  • Proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans and capture strategies
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Visible industry leader and representative of Burns in key markets
  • Significant time spent externally with clients, partners, and at industry events
  • Drive measurable results aligned with company sales and growth targets
  • Help position Burns as a national leader in Railroad & Transit services

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute strategic growth plans for the Railroad & Transit practice
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities aligned with priorities
  • Lead annual business development planning and oversee execution
  • Build and maintain relationships with key clients, agencies, and partners
  • Leverage network within rail and transit for opportunities and collaborations
  • Lead capture strategies, including positioning, teaming, and win approach
  • Collaborate with technical and marketing teams on proposals and fee strategies
  • Support contract negotiations, due diligence, and partnerships
  • Maintain up-to-date intelligence on clients, competitors, and market trends in CRM
  • Represent Burns at industry events and client engagements
  • Partner with leadership to align BD with strategic goals
  • Lead BD meetings and pipeline reviews
  • Mentor staff on BD best practices
  • Collaborate with marketing on branding and campaigns
