Job summary

RailPros is seeking a Rail Structures Design Intern in Chicago, IL to contribute to the design and development of rail projects, focusing on bridges, culverts, and retaining walls. You will gain hands-on experience with CAD software and work with experienced professionals.

Ideal candidates are pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering (ABET/EAC accredited) with no prior work experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in design development with the rail design team and engineers.

  • Participate in QA/QC to ensure designs meet standards.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.

Job Summary

Join RailPros as a Rail Structures Design Intern and dive into the dynamic field of rail infrastructure. This internship provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the design and development of rail projects, in particular the design or rail bridges, culverts and retaining walls. As a vital team member, you will work alongside experienced professionals, gain hands‑on experience with industry‑leading CAD software, and play a key role in the success of ongoing projects. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist in Design Development: Contribute to the development and enhancement of rail infrastructure projects by working closely with the rail design team. Collaborate with rail Structural engineers to create detailed design drawings, plans, and specifications.
  • CAD Modeling and Drafting: Utilize computer-aided design (CAD) software (Microstation) to produce accurate and detailed models and drawings. Ensure designs comply with industry standards, regulations, and project requirements.
  • Data Analysis: Collect and analyze data relevant to rail projects to support design and development activities.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Work effectively with cross-functional teams, including engineers and project managers. Communicate ideas, progress, and challenges clearly and effectively.
  • Quality Assurance: Participate in quality assurance and quality control activities to ensure designs meet client standards and are error‑free.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet business needs.
Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency with electronic communication (e‑mail, text) and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).

Required Education and Experience
  • Working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program.
