Job summary

RailPros, Inc. invites you to join as a Utilities Intern and gain hands-on experience in civil and rail engineering. You will work closely with the project management team on planning, execution, and completion of civil projects, contributing to deliverables and client satisfaction.

You will collaborate with engineers and real estate teams, learn industry standards, and participate in meetings, site reviews, and documentation to support project success.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of civil engineering principles as applied to utilities infrastructure.
  • Proficiency with engineering software and tools used in design and analysis.
  • Familiarity with codes, standards and regulations for utilities infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical abilities.
  • Clear communication and teamwork skills are essential.
  • Ability to work independently in a dynamic environment.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in work product.
  • Basic project management concepts familiarity.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in review and analysis of utilities infrastructure projects (water, wastewater, drainage, electrical).
  • Review designs and construction plans for AREMA and client standards compliance.
  • Utilize GIS maps for mileposts and stationing calculations.
  • Provide comments to Real Estate and utility teams within defined timelines.
  • Escalate variance requests following SOPs and project needs.
  • Develop understanding of real estate agreements and permits for reviews.
  • Build relationships with client engineering departments and internal teams.
  • Track submittals and responses in PM systems.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist in the review design and analysis of utilities infrastructure projects, including water, wastewater, drainage, and electrical systems
  • Conduct reviews of utility designs, engineering plans and/or construction work plans for compliance with AREMA and railroad client’s specific railroad standards
  • Utilize railroad client’s Valuation Maps and electronic GIS maps for calculating mileposts and stationing
  • Provide comments in approved format to Real Estate team and utility company within the contractually defined timeline
  • Escalate variance requests to Manager or client in accordance with standard operating procedures
  • Develop thorough understanding of real estate agreement/permits and all construction requirements and apply knowledge to all reviews
  • Develop relationships with client engineering departments
  • Track all submittals and responses in assigned project management systems
  • Participate in applicant requested meetings/conference calls as needed
  • Participate in client meetings
  • Escalate complex or non traditional issues to Manager of Utility Engineering
  • Work closely with project managers, Real Estate Specialist, and protection service team to execute project deliverables
  • Conduct limited field observation on project sites before, during, and after construction
  • Stay updated with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies related to utilities engineering in the railroad industry
  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and respectful workplace culture, free from behaviors that undermine morale, productivity, or organizational values
  • Uphold the organization’s standards of integrity, accountability, and respect in all duties and interactions
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulation
  • Other duties as assigned or required to meet the business needs

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of civil engineering principles, particularly in utilities infrastructure
  • Proficiency in engineering software and tools related to civil engineering design and analysis
  • Familiarity with engineering codes, standards, and regulations relevant to utilities infrastructure
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a dynamic work environment
  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work
  • Knowledge of project management concepts and practices
  • Strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and adapt
  • Proficiency with electronic communication including email and text, as well as standard office applications (i.e., "Microsoft Office Suite")
  • Possess basic oral and written communication skills
  • Interact with other staff
Required Education And Experience
  • Enrollment in a Civil Engineering degree program or a related field
  • Prior coursework or training in civil engineering fundamentals
  • Basic knowledge of engineering software applications
