Job summary

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) in Mason City, Iowa, is hiring an Assistant Trainmaster to supervise yard and road operations, ensuring the daily plan is safe, cost-effective, and well-coordinated. You will lead crews, monitor safety and performance metrics, and support train movements across yard and mainline.

Role requires overseeing operating plans, dispatch, and compliance with CROR/GCOR rules, with occasional train operation and certification maintenance.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Railway conductor/engineer experience is an asset.
• Valid driver's license is required.
• Willing to work all shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.
• Demonstrates leadership with a drive for career progression.
• Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills.
• Flexibility to changing priorities and work situations.
• Excellent communication including radio.
• Able to read and understand safety instructions and operating rules in English.
• Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).

Responsibilities

• Coordinate all train movements within the yard and mainline under supervision and cross‑department communication.
• Standardize processes for operating plans, arrivals, classifications, building, inspection and dispatch.
• Lead safety, service, productivity and financial metric inputs and outputs.
• Act as safety leader, promoting rule compliance and preventative measures with staff.
• Occasionally operate trains and maintain required certifications.
• Assist in crew transportation to trains.
