Job summary

CPKC in Saint Paul, MN is seeking a Rail Car Mechanic to maintain and repair freight cars in a safety‑focused, high‑production environment. You will receive hands‑on training, including a four‑week welding course designed for railroad work, and travel occasionally to support operations.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, 2+ years on heavy equipment, a Class B CDL, and strong English communication. Flexibility for nights, weekends, and holidays is essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience working on or around heavy equipment.
• Valid Class B Commercial driver's license.
• Welding experience is an asset.
• Available to work all shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.
• Ability to pass the required written examinations, read and understand safety instructions in English.
• Dedication to safety and ability to work within guidelines/rules.
• Strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Repair, maintain and inspect freight car equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
• Perform preventative maintenance on trucks, under-frame, structure, safety appliances, braking and draft systems; tests.
• Handle rush repairs, road work, and supplementary service operations for equipment.
• Weld, torch cut, and use hand tools around rail cars.
