Radiology Technologist – Float

Location

This position provides coverage for vacations, leaves, and staffing needs throughout the Orthopedic Service Line. Reliable transportation and the ability to travel between locations are required.

Schedule
  • Monday – Friday
  • 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
  • No scheduled holidays
  • Weekend opportunities available as overtime

UPMC Orthopedic Care is seeking a Radiology Technologist – Float to support our growing Orthopedic Service Line. This position plays an essential role in providing high-quality diagnostic imaging services across multiple outpatient orthopedic locations. The Radiology Technologist will work closely with orthopedic providers to perform imaging studies, support patient care, and ensure efficient clinic operations while traveling between sites as needed.

Typical Day
  • Complete X-ray studies according to orthopedic provider protocols
  • Assess orthopedic walk-in clinic patients and perform imaging studies as needed
  • Review upcoming schedules and prepare imaging orders in advance
  • Request outside imaging from hospitals and healthcare facilities for provider review
  • Collaborate with providers and clinical staff to support patient care and clinic efficiency
  • Travel between Orthopedic Service Line locations to provide coverage for vacations, sick time, and staffing needs
  • Ensure patients receive high-quality, compassionate care throughout their imaging experience
Responsibilities
  • Identifies all patients properly by using two patient identifiers and utilizes universal protocol when performing procedures. Reviews patient history and assesses physician orders, applying specific departmental protocols for optimal results in the acquisition of data. Documents patient history in electronic record as required.
  • Administers PO and rectal contrast per physician orders/department policy
  • Ensures all exams within his/her area of responsibility are properly coded and tracked through RIS system, all exams are properly networked to ISITE for archiving and interpretation, and all charges are adequately entered for the exams performed.
  • Performs diagnostic radiography procedures utilizing established protocols/procedures without requiring constant supervision.
  • Utilizes complex imaging equipment for the acquisition, analysis, manipulation and documentation of image data and completes procedures according to protocol.
  • Demonstrates a strong ability to interact with both patients and co-workers, while displaying a high level of caring, listening, dignity and respect. Able to work as team member within the department and all other departments to expedite patient care efficiently.
  • Performs a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgement to adjust protocols and shows initiative to apply prescribed ionizing radiation appropriately for diagnostic radiography purposes.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate instructions to patients in a clear and concise manner and explain procedures to help allay the patient's fears and solicit their cooperation.
  • Graduate of an ARRT approved school of Radiologic Technology or verification from ARRT approved school of completion of program and scheduled graduation date.
  • Technologists hired before graduation will have indirect supervision by an ARRT certified diagnostic technologist until the degree is verified.
Technologist cannot work in an outpatient setting until ARRT has been obtained.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
  • ARRT Registry eligible as a Radiologic Technologist required.
  • Must obtain ARRT Radiography Registry within 6 months of hire date for Diagnostic Technologists hired on or after January 1, 2025.
  • Diagnostic Technologists hired prior to January 1, 2025, must obtain ARRT Registry within 12 months of hire or transfer date.
  • CPR or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • CPR certification must meet American Heart Association (AHA) standards and include both didactic and skills demonstration components within 30 days of hire.
  • Technologists may not work independently in an outpatient setting until ARRT certification has been obtained.
  • If working in a New York facility, candidates must:
  • Hold certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).
  • Maintain licensure through the New York State Department of Health.
  • Technologists practicing under a temporary permit:
  • Must work under the direct supervision of a licensed Radiologic Technologist.
  • Must obtain ARRT certification within 180 days of the permit issue date.
  • Temporary permits expire 180 days from issuance, upon notice that a license application has been denied, or 10 days after notification of failure of the licensing examination, whichever occurs first.
