The Xray Technologist Lead performs duties directly involved with a variety of general Xray procedures. This role includes applying ionizing radiation or other forms of energy, following sterile technique, documenting case information, using independent judgment and critical thinking skills, and ensuring smooth patient flow and satisfaction of the physician. The Lead oversees technologists and ancillary personnel, recommends scheduling, and ensures exam scheduling, equipment maintenance, and JCAHO compliance.

Day to Day

Provides clinical services according to radiology practice standards to ensure optimal department functions. Oversees and demonstrates skills and knowledge in use of all X-ray equipment and performance of all X-ray protocols and procedures. Demonstrates technical proficiency in producing high quality scans, ensuring proper anatomical coverage within appropriate time limits. Maintains satisfactory working knowledge of PACS/RIS and reviews scans with the Radiologist to identify important anatomical detail and areas of abnormalities.

Imaging

Accomplishes all positions related to each procedure and applies immobilization devices for patient comfort. Selects proper technique factor, produces images of desired quality, performs calibration tests to meet density factors and correct specifications prior to utilization, and carries out proper warming-up procedures to prevent equipment damage. Applies Radiation Protection procedures daily to eliminate excessive radiation and demonstrates borders on all images while using collimation devices to limit exposure.

Equipment/Patient Assistance

Assists in delivery of care and accepts responsibility for authority. Arms the syringe and assists the physician in the delivery of contrast media accurately. Arms the injector for delivery of contrast media, has general knowledge of the injector, and identifies malfunctions and corrective actions. Recognizes life‑threatening situations and assists healthcare team members. Transports patients as necessary, transfers patients to the table, and assists with a variety of equipment or procedures not routinely taught. Supports personnel and students to ensure proper care and quality. Seeks additional information as needed and proposes improvements to the established manual.

Proper Documentation of Records and Charges

Appropriately documents procedures in the case event log, ensuring a complete record of supplies used. Ensures all films are properly identified per department policy. Documents all pertinent information relative to patient care and charges accordingly in a timely fashion.

Hospital Equipment Maintenance

Inspects, maintains, and cleans all equipment daily without causing damage or excessive wear. Ensures equipment is properly secured to prevent loss or damage while not in use and informs the Director of any situation that may produce staff, patient, or physician complaints.

Lead Duties

Provides daily assignment of technologists to expedite workflow, creates monthly call schedules for the Director and hospital operator, and instructs new employees. Documents on-the-job injuries and forwards them via proper channels on the same day. Works closely with the Director to formulate protocols and charges for any new procedure.

Experience Qualifications

• Required: 2 years of Xray experience.

Licenses and Certifications

• Required: Basic Life Support HeartSaver & First Aid through the American Heart Association.
• Required: Licensed Radiology Technician through the Louisiana State Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners.
• Required: Radiography Certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist.

Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of general anatomy, physiology, radiation properties of X-ray and fluoroscopy equipment, and other relevant areas.
• General medical terminology knowledge and ability to administer Basic Life Support.
• Knowledge of state laws regarding licensure.
• Ability to place monitoring devices on patients, position patients on the table, and use manual dexterity to position the camera head.
• Ability to utilize basic computer and data entry skills.
