Job description

Overview

The Radiology Technologist Supervisor provides day-to-day supervision for an assigned Radiology area (e.g., Diagnostic, Breast Imaging, Stony Point, CT/MRI, 3D lab) to include STAR Service, legal and regulatory compliance, clinical operations, human resources, safety & quality, customer service, leadership, and fiscal responsibility. The position ensures all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are performed by qualified staff, are of the highest quality, and follow ALARA radiation safety principles, ACR Guidelines for imaging practices, and ACR MRI safety guidelines where applicable. The supervisor ensures compliance with VCU and VCUHS policies and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Work directly with lead technologists and front line staff to solve problems and reduce barriers to success.
  • Operate within the Scope of Practice of the respective specialty, as described in the Staff Technologist job description; maintain technical competency in all areas of responsibility.
  • Implement new initiatives, programs, and policies.
  • Collaborate with other Radiology Supervisors, Managers, Faculty and staff to ensure departmental safety, quality, and teamwork.
  • Report to the Modality Manager and be responsible for clinical functions and processes for the assigned Radiology area.
  • Ensure highest level of operational excellence while maintaining safety, efficiency, high quality, and cost-effective care.
  • Supervise, oversee, maintain, and improve business functions and processes related to the area of responsibility.
  • Develop staff education and competencies, including educational materials and competency forms; provide education to the assigned team, students, residents, and other learners.
Licensure, Certification, Or Registration Requirements for Hire

Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) required for Diagnostic Supervisor, plus one of the following specialty registries related to the department: ARRT Mammography for Breast Imaging Supervisor; ARRT CT for CT Supervisor; ARRT MRI for MRI Supervisor; ARRT CV or VIR for Interventional Supervisor; ARRT CT or MRI for 3D lab supervisor; (CI) Cardiac Interventional Radiography; (RCIS) Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist; (RCES) Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist.

Licensure, Certification, Or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment

Current ARRT certification required for Diagnostic Supervisor, plus one of the specialty registries listed above relevant to the department: ARRT Mammography for Breast Imaging Supervisor; ARRT CT for CT Supervisor; ARRT MRI for MRI Supervisor; ARRT CV or VIR for Interventional Supervisor; ARRT CT or MRI for 3D lab supervisor; (CI) Cardiac Interventional Radiography; (RCIS) Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist; (RCES) Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist.

Experience

Experience REQUIRED

  • Minimum of one (1) year of Lead Tech radiologic technology experience.

Experience PREFERRED

  • Minimum of three (3) years of technical experience.
  • Experience performing in a leadership role; prior work in an academic medical center environment.
Education/Training

Education/training REQUIRED

  • Graduation from a JRC Accredited Program in Radiologic Technology recognized by the ARRT.

Education/training PREFERRED

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Radiation Science, Business, or closely related field from an accredited program is strongly preferred.
  • Master’s Degree in Health Administration, Business Administration, or closely related field is preferred.

  • All day-to-day workflow coordination and team supervision.
  • Advice and guidance sought from Manager on an as-needed basis when there is a major impact on modality activity.

  • All team members in the assigned modality report to this position; day-to-day workflow responsibilities may be delegated as appropriate.
  • Supervisors are expected to cover unplanned staff absences on any shift, as needed.
