Qualifications

  • Proficiency with radiation safety software and related computer tools.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with the radioactive materials license and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain accountability of all radioactive materials and secure them against unauthorized removal.
  • Verify that radioactive materials are handled only by qualified personnel.
  • Oversee personnel monitoring for internal and external radiation exposure.
  • Maintain records required by the license and company policies.
  • Serve as liaison with regulatory agencies and prepare license amendments.
  • Develop and deliver radiation safety training with testing and documentation.

Job description

Our client, a nuclear services and radioactive waste management organization, is seeking an experienced Radiation Safety Officer to lead radiation protection at its licensed facility. The RSO ensures full compliance with the facility's radioactive materials license and all applicable state and federal regulations, trains staff on radiation safety principles, and serves as the primary liaison with regulatory authorities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with all terms and conditions of the radioactive materials license and applicable radiation regulations
  • Maintain accurate accountability of all radioactive materials and secure them against unauthorized removal
  • Verify that radioactive materials are handled only by qualified, authorized personnel
  • Oversee personnel monitoring for internal and external radiation exposure
  • Maintain all records required by the license and company radiation protection policies
  • Serve as chief liaison with regulatory agencies; prepare and obtain license amendments to support optimal facility operations
  • Develop and deliver radiation safety training, with testing and documentation to ensure accountability
  • Operate, calibrate, and train others on fixed laboratory counting equipment and portable survey instruments across the full spectrum of radionuclides
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • B.S. in Health Physics or a related field (natural sciences, engineering); equivalent experience may substitute for the degree
  • 10+ years of full-time radiation protection experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory and/or RSO role
  • Training and experience sufficient to qualify as RSO with the applicable regulatory authority (documentation subject to agency approval)
  • Proficiency with computers and radiation protection software
