Responsibilities

• Serve as the Radiation Safety Officer of record for the site radioactive materials license and enforce policies.
• Maintain and support site EHS programs with regulatory compliance.
• Perform complex dosimetry evaluations and document dose assignments.
• Develop and present RP and EHS training programs for all staff.
• Maintain compliance records and detect trends requiring investigation.
• Represent RP and EHS in audits, investigations, and project committees.

• Provide RP/EHS support to corporate programs and other sites.
• Lead site emergency response as Emergency Response Coordinator during radiological incidents.

Job description

The Radiation Safety Officer and EHS Lead is responsible to lead, implement, manage and monitor the Radiation Protection (RP) and EHS programs at the site level ensuring the safety of employees, contractors, and members of the public. This position proactively manages compliance with RP/EHS policies and regulations including NRC, OSHA, EPA and equivalent State regulations for the site. The incumbent is expected to develop and foster internal relationships, encourage engagement from all levels, and minimize risks of occupational injury/illness.

Essential Functions

• Serve as the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) of record for the site radioactive materials license with the authority to enforce radiological policies and procedures regarding radiation safety and regulatory compliance in the use and handling of radioactive materials.
• Maintains, develops and supports site EHS programs in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
• Perform complex dosimetry evaluations for internal exposure, external exposure and skin contamination events and ensure proper documentation of evaluations and dose assignments.
• Develop and present RP and EHS training programs to individuals and groups, including introductory radiation safety training, new employee EHS training, advanced training, and special topic/audience training as needed.
• Maintain RP and EHS program compliance records and ensure they are complete, legible and timely. Detect trends or conditions that may warrant further investigation.
• Represent the RP and EHS programs during incident investigations, change control committees and project committees.
• Facilitate internal audits of the radiation protection and EHS programs.
• Perform incident investigations, determining root causes and appropriate corrective actions.
• Designated point of contact for Radiation and EHS regulatory inspections. Communicate with relevant state and federal regulatory agencies as needed. Ensure site maintains compliance with existing and proposed regulations and standards that may affect operations. Advise management and elevate as needed.
• Provide RP and EHS support to corporate RP and EHS programs and other PT sites, as needed.
• Lead the site emergency response, coordinating and/or providing technical information and guidance as the Emergency Response Coordinator during radiological and safety emergencies.
• Provide manufacturing and site support for off-hours operations as necessary.
• Actively promote safety rules and awareness. Always demonstrates good safety practices including the appropriate use of protective equipment. Reports and takes initiative to correct hazards.

Education/Experience

• Meets the training and experience requirements to be approved as Radiation Safety Officer by the State or NRC.
• Bachelor's degree in health physics, physical science, engineering or biological science.
• 4+ years of direct health physics/RSO experience, preferably within a complex radiopharmaceutical manufacturing or research environment.
• Experience leading Radiation/EHS programs and initiatives and interfacing with regulators.
• Certified Health Physicist by the American Board of Health Physics a plus.
• OSHA 40-hour General Industry certification a plus.

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

• Knowledge of implementing experience with Radiation, Chemical and Health safety programs based on regulatory requirements and standards.
• OSHA 300 reporting and accident investigations
• Knowledge of reporting needs relative to regulatory requirements (EHS & Radiation Safety)
• Experience with shipping and receiving radioactive materials.
• Experience in writing procedures and other associated documentation in accordance with federal and state regulations and company practices.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong training and motivation skills.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
