Job summary

ABB is seeking an experienced engineer to join our North American team in a hybrid role in Mebane, NC. You will contribute to the development and maintenance of MV distribution solutions, lead IP initiatives, and work across ABB factories worldwide to solve problems with innovative approaches.

Ideal candidates have 8+ years in electrical power equipment, MV product design experience, and familiarity with relevant standards (IEEE/IEC/NEMA/UL).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical)
  • Minimum 8 years in the electrical power equipment industry
  • Experience with MV Reclosers or outdoor MV distribution products
  • Proficiency in MV electrical products design (reclosers, breakers, switches)
  • Knowledge of ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, UL standards

Responsibilities

  • Maintain expertise in MV Reclosers; integrate latest tech into work
  • Collaborate with ABB Factories in MX, DE, CZ, and US
  • Document results (findings, designs, software) for maintenance
  • Lead IP generation and contribute to IP strategy
  • Support certification efforts (UL, CSA, IEC) and perform root-cause analysis

Each day, you will act as the first point of contact in Research and Development for specific product-related issues and maintenance. You will also showcase your expertise by identifying, proposing, and implementing innovative solutions.The work model for the role is: Hybrid in Mebane, NCThis role is contributing to the Electrification Distribution Solutions division at the North American Technology Center in Mebane, NC.You will be mainly accountable for:Maintaining recognized expertise in a Medium-Voltage (MV) Reclosers area by integrating the latest developments in technologies, tools, and methodologies into your work.Working closely with the ABB Factories in MX, DE, CZ, and Mebane, NC finding new ways of solving problems by following your ideas, creating hypotheses, and defining ways to validate them.Documenting work results (like findings, designs, or software), allowing others to maintain and improve them.Understanding and initiating IP generation in your area of specialization and participating in the project IP strategy development.Ensure compliance with IEEE C37.60, IEC 62271-111, ANSI, and related standards.Support UL, CSA, and IEC certification efforts, ensuring full compliance with global standards.Lead root-cause analysis, design reviews, and reliability engineering to maintain exceptional product quality.Understanding and initiating IP generation in your area of specialization and participating in the project IP strategy development.Qualifications for the roleBachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical preferred).Minimum 8 years of experience in the electrical power equipment industry required, preferably, in the field of MV Reclosers or overhead MV Distribution products.Proficiency in electrical equipment design in one or more of the following products: Reclosers, Breakers, Outdoor Overhead Distribution products, circuit breakers, contactors, and switches, etc.Working knowledge of simulation software (Dielectric, thermal, structural) desired.Knowledge of relevant industry standards.
