Job summary

The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is recruiting Research and Development Mechanical Engineers to design, fabricate, and test mechanical components for undersea power systems in the Energy Science and Power Systems division. On-site role in State College, PA with DoD SkillBridge involvement and clearances considerations.

Candidates should have strong mechanical design and analysis skills, CAD proficiency (NX/SolidWorks/Creo), and experience with FEA; advanced degrees

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or science; 5+ years of relevant experience
  • No required certifications
  • U.S. citizen and eligible for government clearance

Responsibilities

  • Develop, validate, and improve complex mechanical designs from concept through production
  • Collaborate with research and development, additive manufacturing, and testing teams to resolve design challenges
  • Support design reviews, prototype builds, and testing activities
  • Identify opportunities for performance improvement, cost reduction, and design for manufacturability (DFM)
  • Perform structural and thermal-fluid analysis using analytical methods and FEA tools to evaluate mechanical components, assemblies, and systems
  • Background checks and security clearances may be required; eligibility for security clearance may apply
