Job summary

Boxabl Inc. seeks an experienced R&D Engineer to drive innovation from early-stage concept through feasibility, prototyping, and production transfer.

The ideal candidate has 3–5 years in R&D or product development, strong prototyping skills, and SolidWorks proficiency, with familiarity in regulatory and safety standards applicable to the product.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
• 3–5 years of R&D testing or product development experience.
• Strong hands-on prototyping across multiple fabrication methods.
• Experience with CAD tools (SolidWorks) for concept modeling.
• Ability to design experiments, plan tests, collect data, analyze results.
• Excellent technical communication and documentation skills.
• Familiarity with regulatory codes and product listings (UL/CSA/IEC/ETL).
• Experience with lab testing and working with certification bodies.

The ideal candidate is comfortable operating in ambiguity, enjoys hands-on experimentation, and can translate research findings into practical, manufacturable outcomes.Job Duties and ResponsibilitiesResearch, design, and prototype new concepts, materials, and technologies to solve open-ended technical problemsConduct feasibility studies and proof-of-concept builds to validate new ideas before committing to full product developmentDesign and run experiments, tests, and simulations to characterize performance, failure modes, and design limitsBuild and iterate on prototypes rapidly, using both traditional and rapid prototyping methods (3D printing, machining, benchtop fixtures, etc.)Analyze test data and translate findings into actionable design recommendationsCollaborate with design engineering and production/manufacturing engineering teams to transition successful R&D projects into producible designsStay current with emerging technologies, materials, and industry trends relevant to the company's product roadmapDocument research methodology, findings, and IP-relevant work (lab notebooks, technical reports, invention disclosures)Identify and mitigate technical risk early in the development cyclePresent research findings and recommendations to engineering leadership and cross-functional stakeholdersExperience and EducationBachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field (or equivalent practical experience)Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in R&D Testing, or product development engineeringStrong hands-on prototyping skills and comfort working across multiple fabrication methodsExperience with CAD tools (SolidWorks or equivalent) for concept modeling and prototype designSolid understanding of engineering fundamentals — mechanics, materials, thermal, or relevant domain knowledgeExperience designing and executing experiments, including test planning, data collection, and statistical analysisAbility to work with ambiguous, loosely defined problems and independently structure an approachStrong analytical and problem-solving skills; comfortable with iterative, hypothesis-driven workExcellent technical documentation and communication skills, including presenting findings to non-technical stakeholdersFamiliarity with regulatory and code compliance processes — building codes, product listing requirements (UL/CSA/IEC/ETL), and safety/performance standards relevant to the product categoryExperience working with test labs, certification bodies, or notified bodies to achieve product listings or approvalsPreferred QualificationsComfortable owning multiple concurrent projects and driving them to completion under tight deadlinesFamiliarity with rapid prototyping technologies (additive manufacturing, CNC, laser cutting)Solidworks Certification (CSWA or higher) a plusFamiliarity with Product Lifecycle Management softwareExposure to Lean Manufacturing, or continuous improvement principlesPrior experience in automotive product design/testingWork Environment/Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
