Qualifications

  • Solid understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack-up, and DFM/DFA principles.
  • Excellent cross-functional communication with production, quality, and supply chain teams.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and code compliance processes (UL/CSA/IEC/ETL).

Responsibilities

  • Design components, assemblies, and systems using SolidWorks with production-ready drawings (GD&T).
  • Translate product requirements into manufacturable designs balancing performance, cost, and schedule.
  • Partner with manufacturing to support DFM/DFA reviews and create assembly instructions.
  • Support NPI and first-article inspection; assist production ramp-up.
  • Create and maintain BOMs, ECOs, and technical documentation.
  • Select materials, fasteners, and processes based on design intent; perform basic engineering calculations/FEA.
  • Collaborate with R&D to develop prototypes and troubleshoot fit and tolerance issues.
  • Work with Procurement to ensure supplier conformance and adjust designs for manufacturability.
  • Document the design process and present progress to stakeholders.
  • Evaluate designs against industry standards and regulations.

This role is responsible for designing, developing, and refining mechanical components and assemblies from concept through production, while working closely with our manufacturing facility to ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability, cost, and quality. The ideal candidate combines strong SolidWorks proficiency with hands-on manufacturing floor experience.Job Duties and ResponsibilitiesDesign components, assemblies, and systems using SolidWorks, including detailed part models, assemblies, and production-ready drawings with GD&TTranslate product requirements and concepts into manufacturable designs, balancing performance, cost, and schedulePartner directly with manufacturing and production to support design-for-manufacturability (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) reviews, as well as assembly instruction creationSupport new product introduction (NPI), coordinating between engineering and production to troubleshoot fit, tolerance, and process issuesCreate and maintain BOMs, engineering change orders (ECOs), and technical documentationSelect appropriate materials, fasteners, and manufacturing processes based on design intent (machining, sheet metal, injection molding, welding, casting, etc.)Perform tolerance stack-up analysis and basic engineering calculations/FEA to validate designsCollaborate with R&D team to develop and test prototypes; support first-article inspection and production ramp-upWork with Procurement team to ensure suppliers are meeting design specifications & adjust designs based on manufacturabilitySupport root-cause analysis and corrective actions for design- or manufacturing-related quality issuesEvaluate design solutions against industry standards and regulations.Document the design process and present progress reports to all relevant stakeholders.Other duties as assigned.Experience and EducationBachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field (or equivalent practical experience)Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in designing consumer-grade productsStrong proficiency in SolidWorks (3D Modeling and 2D drawings)Solid understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack-up, and DFM/DFA principlesProject development and leadership skills are essentialStrong problem-solving skills and ability to work cross-functionally with production, quality, and supply chain teamsExcellent communication skills, both written and verbalFamiliarity with regulatory and code compliance processes — building codes, product listing requirements (UL/CSA/IEC/ETL), and safety/performance standards relevant to the product categoryPreferred QualificationsTrack record of taking designs from initial concept through full production launch into marketComfortable owning multiple concurrent projects and driving them to completion under tight deadlinesSolidworks Certification (CSWA or higher) a plusFamiliarity with Product Lifecycle Management softwareExposure to Lean Manufacturing, or continuous improvement principlesPrior experience in automotive product designTrack record of designing with compliance in mind from the concept stage, rather than treating certification as an afterthoughtWork Environment/Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
